The recently released Outdoor Recreation Economic Impact Study for Northwest Michigan has brought to light the significant contribution of the outdoor economy in the region. According to the study, the outdoor industry contributed $1.15 billion to the Gross Regional Product in 2022, and it employed 4,712 workers, showcasing double the concentration of agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting employment compared to national averages.

The data presented by Networks Northwest shows that northwest Michigan spends 32 percent more on boats, trailers, campers, and recreational vehicles than the national average. This highlights the importance of outdoor recreation in the area and presents opportunities for growth and development.

Stacie Bytwork, President of the Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce and Networks Northwest board member, emphasizes the importance of understanding the opportunities available in the recreational sector. By developing a plan to attract growth, the region can stand out as a place of choice for outdoor enthusiasts.

The Outdoor Recreation Economic Impact Study was a collaboration between Networks Northwest, the Alliance for Economic Success, the Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce, the Northern Lakes Economic Alliance, and Traverse Connect.
