The Newcastle Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Wyoming State Forestry Division are joining forces to enhance forest health and resiliency in a project that aims to improve firefighter response and increase public access. Known as the Sheldon Good Neighbor Authority (GNA) Project, this initiative is located about 6 miles northeast of Newcastle, Wyo., near the South Dakota border.

The area is at risk of wildfires and insect infestation due to excessive tree density and understory growth. To address these issues, the proposed project includes commercial thinning of forest stands through timber sales and improvement projects. The goal is to reduce the risk of stand-replacing fires and insect infestations while also improving access to the area from Beaver Stockade County Road.

The preliminary environmental assessment for the Sheldon GNA Project can be reviewed online until April 30, with comments submitted through the project website or by mailing them to the BLM Newcastle Field Office. This collaborative effort between different agencies and organizations aims to protect and improve forest health for all stakeholders involved.

For more information or to provide feedback on this project, individuals can contact the Newcastle Field Office directly.
