The introduction of black boxes in cars produced after July 7 this year is set to revolutionize collision reconstruction. These black boxes, located in the airbag of the car, record essential data such as brake pressure, steering wheel angle, gas pedal activity, gear revolutions, and the time of collision. This information will be crucial in determining the cause of accidents and holding individuals accountable for their actions.

Krunoslav Ormuž, a traffic court expert, explained the details of the black box system to Nova TV. The data collected by the black box cannot be deactivated or installed in the vehicle afterward, ensuring its accuracy. However, there are concerns about possible misuse of this data, and regulations must be established to prevent it. Kristijan Tićak, editor-in-chief of Auto, motor i sport magazine, emphasized the importance of clarifying legal regulations associated with the black box system.

The potential benefits of black boxes extend beyond reconstruction. For example, they can prevent fraud in reporting traffic accidents. It will no longer be possible to drink and drive then sober up and report an incident the next day as precise timing of collisions will be recorded. Previously smartphones played a role in determining accident causes but now black boxes provide more detailed and accurate data.

The data captured by black boxes will also be essential for investigations into traffic accidents. It will provide crucial details to authorities such as potential speed mobile phone use among other relevant factors that could have contributed to an accident’s cause. Black boxes have already proven themselves valuable tools in Europe where they are used extensively for collision reconstruction purposes.

Overall while there may be concerns about privacy and misuse of data collected by these devices it is clear that they have significant potential to improve safety on our roads by providing more accurate information about car crashes allowing authorities to take quicker action against those responsible for them and ultimately saving lives through better prevention measures.
