Apple recently decided to remove WhatsApp, Signal, and other messaging apps from its Chinese app store. This move reflects the reality that big tech companies must make compromises in order to operate in different parts of the world. While this may seem unique to China, it could also happen in the US if a bill proposing a ban on TikTok becomes law.

Apple’s decision to remove these messaging apps was explained by an unidentified communications representative to The Wall Street Journal. “We are obligated to follow the laws in the countries where we operate, even when we disagree,” stated the representative. This sentiment is familiar to those who have followed Apple’s relationship with China. In the past, the company has made similar concessions, such as removing apps used by Hong Kong protesters.

Big US tech companies have often had to comply with local laws and regulations in different countries, even if those actions would be considered controversial or unacceptable in the US. For example, Netflix removed an episode of a show to appease Saudi Arabia and Facebook removed content that Turkey disapproved of.

The potential TikTok ban in the US has gained traction in the House of Representatives and could lead to similar actions by tech companies operating in America if it becomes law. If this bill does become enforceable, Apple and Google would be required to remove TikTok from their app stores. While this would be a significant development for TikTok users in America, Apple would likely have a prepared statement explaining their compliance with the law.

Ultimately, whether or not TikTok will be banned in America depends on how the legal system handles this situation. The bill may face legal challenges that could prolong this process but if it does become enforceable it could set a new precedent for tech companies operating within American borders.
