Stefano La Rovere, Amazon’s director of global robotics, mechatronics, and sustainable packaging, has refuted the notion that technology takes away jobs. In an interview with CNBC, he stated that it is a “myth” that robots and advanced technology eliminate jobs. Instead, he argued that these technologies are enhancing people’s roles and creating entirely new job categories.

La Rovere emphasized that Amazon has created over 700 new categories of jobs through the use of technology in the past few years. He also highlighted that robots and technology assist employees by reducing walking distance between tasks, eliminating repetitive movements, and aiding in lifting heavy weights. As a result, the introduction of new technologies has led to the enhancement of more than 50,000 jobs across Amazon’s fulfilment centres in Europe.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai and OpenAI chief have also shared this sentiment, stating that technology is not only helping employees in their current roles but also enabling them to acquire new skills and competencies that can propel them towards their career goals. Amazon has invested over 700 million euros in installing over 1,000 new technologies across its European fulfilment centre network in the past five years. The company continues to invest heavily in emerging technologies to enhance its operations and create new job opportunities for its employees.
