In response to growing concerns about foreign interference in the upcoming European elections, Belgium has activated the EU crisis mechanism. As the current holder of the EU Council presidency, Belgium took the initiative to establish a tool that facilitates information exchange among the 27 member states regarding interference in crucial elections. While not directed at any specific country, this decision came after multiple instances of Russian espionage and revelations that a platform promoting Russian propaganda had paid Members of the European Parliament for their cooperation.

Investigations into the Voice of Europe network, headquartered in Prague, have heightened concerns about Russian interference in European Parliament elections through tactics such as espionage, misinformation campaigns, and influence agents. The threat of hybrid warfare tools being utilized by Russia has raised alarms, particularly with elections in Spain scheduled for June 9.

European Parliament is expected to vote on a resolution calling for a comprehensive investigation into these cases and enhanced monitoring mechanisms. Internal reports from EU institutions warn of escalating Russian destabilization activities aimed at undermining the credibility of the EU and diminishing support for Ukraine. European intelligence services have also highlighted attempts by the Kremlin to reestablish its espionage network within the EU despite previous expulsions of diplomats and sanctions related to the conflict in Ukraine.

At a recent European Council meeting, leaders cautioned against interference attempts during a particularly turbulent period and agreed to closely monitor and mitigate risks. The Prime Ministers of Belgium and the Czech Republic have urged the EU Commission and Council to impose new sanctions and measures to combat Russia’s activities and enhance the role of prosecutors in addressing such cases.
