Memorial Day weekend is a time for many to head to the beach and soak up the sun. However, before heading to the water, it’s important for beachgoers to be aware of potential health risks. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has issued a warning against swimming, surfing, and playing in the ocean at five local beaches due to elevated bacteria levels.

These beaches include Santa Monica Canyon Creek at Will Rogers State Beach, Mother Beach in Marina Del Rey, Malibu Lagoon at Surfrider Beach, Santa Monica Pier, and Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro. Recent testing showed that all of these locations had bacterial levels exceeding health standards.

However, the department has cleared two other beaches – the Temescal Canyon storm drain at Will Rogers State Beach and the Pico-Kenter storm drain at Santa Monica State Beach. Water quality levels at these beaches are now within state standards.

It’s important for beachgoers to stay informed about potential health risks and to take precautions while enjoying the water. To get the latest updates on beach conditions, you can call the county’s beach closure hotline at 1-800-525-5662 or visit PublicHealth.LACounty.gov/Beach for more information on affected locations and safety tips. Stay safe this Memorial Day weekend!
