In Evansville, Indiana this Saturday, the annual Black Barbershop Health Initiative will take place. The event aims to provide the community with free health screenings and education on chronic diseases. It is a statewide effort that recognizes the importance of providing important health resources to the community.

Black barbershops play a crucial role in the health of Black men, serving as a therapy center and a place of healing. The strong relationship between Black men and their barbers is built on trust, making them an ideal setting for providing health screenings and education. Recognizing the importance of addressing health disparities, the Black Barbershop Health Initiative provides accessible health resources to the community.

According to statistics from the Indiana Department of Health, Black men have the highest mortality rate of any group in Indiana, and prostate cancer is more prevalent among Black men in Indiana than any other racial or ethnic group. This initiative aims to provide accessible healthcare resources to address these disparities.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at seven participating locations in Evansville, including Fila’s Designs, Jerald’s Barbershop, The Dapper Man’s Parlor, Lynch’s House of Coiffure, Going Forward Barber & Beauty Shop, Super Fresh, and Chinnos. This initiative is an important opportunity for Black men in the community to prioritize their health and well-being by seeking preventative medical care through accessible healthcare resources provided by trusted barbershops
