Audubon County’s The Bakery on Broadway was named Small Business of the Week by U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), a member of the Senate Small Business Committee. Throughout her term in Congress, Ernst plans to highlight a small business in each of Iowa’s 99 counties, and The Bakery on Broadway is her latest pick.
Kate Hargens founded The Bakery on Broadway in 2020 with the goal of rejuvenating downtown Audubon and providing a community gathering spot. She has a background as a food scientist and licensed at-home baker, which comes through in the delicious baked goods and custom cakes she offers at the bakery. In addition to serving up treats, Kate also hosts events like “What’s Happening in Audubon” forums and “Art on Broadway” exhibitions to support local artists.
Kate’s dedication to the community has not gone unnoticed. She served as president of the Children’s Nest Childcare Center and was part of the fundraising committee for the Audubon Rec Center. In recognition of her hard work, she was named Citizen of the Year by the Audubon Chamber of Commerce in 2016.
