Pam Cheng, the executive vice president of operations and IT at AstraZeneca, has been leading the pharmaceutical industry in making sustainability a priority. As also the company’s chief sustainability officer, Cheng recognizes the importance of environmental responsibility in the healthcare sector. She believes that a healthy planet is essential for promoting overall well-being, as there is a clear connection between human health and environmental health.

Since joining AstraZeneca in 2015, Cheng has spearheaded efforts to make the company a leader in sustainability within the pharmaceutical industry. One of her major achievements is AstraZeneca’s participation in the Science-Based Target Initiative, where it was one of the first seven global companies to have its greenhouse gas emissions targets verified. The company has also launched an ambitious $1 billion Ambition Zero Carbon program aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. AstraZeneca has already achieved a 68% reduction in emissions and aims to reach 98% by 2025, with plans to transition its entire vehicle fleet to electric by 2026.

In addition to these initiatives, Cheng has implemented innovative solutions at AstraZeneca such as converting one of its manufacturing plants to biomethane, a renewable energy source made from food and farm waste.
