Frida Maanum, an Arsenal midfielder, collapsed during the team’s 1-0 win over Chelsea in the FA Women’s Cup final last Sunday. As a result, she has undergone extensive testing and has received support from the medical team at Arsenal. The club stated that Maanum has been fitted with a monitoring device to record her heart function and will continue to be under medical supervision. Two leading cardiologists have reviewed the test results so far, but no obvious cardiac causes have been found.
During the match, play was suspended in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time when Maanum collapsed on the field. She was treated by medical staff and left the match on a stretcher after regaining consciousness. The game resumed after a nine-minute stoppage, with Arsenal eventually winning 1-0 in extra time. Stina Blackstenius scored the winning goal in the 116th minute.
The club outlined Maanum’s plans to return to training, with Norway’s European Championship qualifiers being put on hold as she goes through a medically supervised return to play.
