In a bid to compete with other AI chatbots like those from Google and OpenAI, Amazon is planning to introduce an upgraded version of Alexa by the end of this year. According to CNBC, users may have to pay a monthly fee to access this new version of Alexa. The company has not yet decided on the price but has confirmed that it will not be included in the existing Prime subscription.

The aim of this update is to provide users with real-time information, intelligent control, and improved home entertainment options. In 2023, Amazon had announced its plan to develop a “smarter, more conversational” Alexa powered by generative AI. The goal is to enhance user experience and make the new version of Alexa more efficient and user-friendly.

Amazon’s decision to potentially charge for the upgraded Alexa is based on the belief that customers may be willing to pay for added value. The company has been working on a new large language model optimized for voice interactions to make the new version of Alexa more efficient and user-friendly. Last year, Dave Limp, the former senior vice president of devices and services at Amazon, had already suggested that future versions of Alexa may come with a price tag.
