The Chinese government introduced the “Double First-Class Scheme” in 2015 with the goal of improving the global rankings of universities through increased publications in international journals. To achieve this, faculty members were instructed to improve their publication records. A report published in the science journal Nature has revealed that some faculty heads took this initiative to an extreme, even telling academics to leave if they did not meet publication targets.

However, this pressure to publish more articles in international journals has also led some academics to engage in unethical practices such as falsifying data, plagiarizing, exploiting students without giving them authorship credit and even bribing journal editors. These behaviors have raised concerns about academic integrity within Chinese universities.

While there are certainly challenges associated with academic integrity and publication practices in China, it is important to recognize the diverse perspectives within the Chinese scientific community when discussing these issues. Some scientists argue that the situation is not as bleak as it is portrayed and that the author of the report only spoke to a small group of academics and may have exaggerated the extent of the problem. It is crucial to consider all viewpoints when discussing these complex issues.
