The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is hosting its first-ever gala tonight to raise awareness and support for refugees in the community. With an estimated 120 million people displaced from their home countries each year, according to the UNHCR, the IRC plays a crucial role in helping refugees integrate into the community and adjust to life in America.

Machar Geu, originally from South Sudan, arrived in Wichita in February after spending most of his life in a refugee camp in Kenya. Leaving behind his child and wife at the camp, Geu described the difficult challenges that refugees face while living in camps. Despite these hardships, he expressed gratitude for this opportunity and described his arrival in America as a rebirth, a new beginning in a welcoming country.

Nataliia Trafimovich, a refugee from Ukraine who arrived in Wichita about a year ago, shared her experiences of adjusting to life as a refugee. She emphasized that no one wants to be a refugee but circumstances force individuals to leave their home countries. Trafimovich expressed appreciation for the support she and her family have received in the U.S., but also highlighted the difficulties of being away from their homeland and families.

Tonight’s gala will bring together individuals and organizations committed to providing assistance and resources to help refugees transition to life in America. By raising awareness about the challenges faced by refugees, this event aims to inspire compassionate action towards those who have been forced to flee their homes due to war, conflict or persecution.
