MU Health Care has recently opened its new Children’s Hospital and Birthing Center in Columbia. The move to the new $230 million hospital is expected to be completed this month. The new facility features 120 beds, all of which are private patient rooms to ensure that families can be comfortable during their stay.
The planning for the new location has been in progress for around five years, with a focus on the future of healthcare for children. The Children’s Hospital was consolidated with the inpatient services of MU Health Care, ensuring sustainability for the future. Laura Hesemann, chair of pediatrics and chief medical officer of the hospital, expressed pride in the thoughtful design of the hospital to meet the special healthcare needs of children, emphasizing the importance of a kid-friendly environment that is comfortable and includes family in the healthcare journey.
The new hospital boasts more space and natural light, creating a bright and happy atmosphere. Construction was mainly carried out by Missouri workers, making it a project built for Missouri by Missourians. MU Health Care served nearly 60,000 children in 2023 and aims to make families feel included in the care process.
Hesemann highlighted the importance of family involvement in pediatric care, as it leads to faster recovery and better outcomes for children. The hospital provides a family room within the pediatric unit for families to relax, have refreshments, do laundry, and rest. Funding for the hospital was primarily provided by MU Health Care, with some state assistance and financial support from the University of Missouri System. The goal is to create a welcoming and family-centered environment where children receive the best possible care.
