The ban on TikTok in the United States now seems highly likely, given that 360 members of the US Congress support the ban while only 58 oppose it. The House of Representatives approved a set of foreign aid laws totaling approximately 95 billion dollars on Saturday, which included a ban on TikTok.
TikTok’s spokesperson expressed disappointment that the House of Representatives is using important foreign aid legislation as a means to push through a ban that would impact the free speech rights of 170 million Americans. According to the spokesperson’s statement to the Daily Mail, the ban could also have detrimental effects on 7 million businesses and ultimately shut down a platform that contributes 24 billion dollars to the American economy each year.
The potential ban on TikTok has been a contentious issue for months, with concerns about data privacy and national security at its core. In August, President Trump ordered a total and complete shutdown of TikTok in the United States, citing concerns about Chinese espionage. However, after legal challenges and negotiations with ByteDance, TikTok was allowed to continue operating in the country under strict conditions.
