Mental Health America of Greater Houston (MHA Houston) recently received an award, The Bell Seal, which recognizes workplaces that prioritize mental health. According to MHA of Greater Houston President Renae Vania Tomczak, creating a mentally safe space in the workplace starts with setting an example of self-care. This demonstrates to employees the value and understanding the company holds for their well-being as human beings.

Some of the benefits that help achieve a mentally healthy workplace include providing paid time off, establishing relaxation spaces in the office (such as using a closet as a relaxation room or setting up an aromatherapy station), and implementing Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) that offer free therapy and other resources. Tomczak emphasized that these initiatives can be cost-effective and show employees that their mental health is valued.

One way to create a mentally safe space is by surveying employees about their mental health experiences and using that feedback to develop support systems within the organization. This investment in mental health can have immeasurable returns. Mental Health America provides resources on mental health and offers counseling services to help organizations and corporations create a mentally healthy work environment.
