In this article, we explore the second part of our series on DeLaval’s new VMS Solutions Technology, also known as batch milking. This advanced system has taken the dairy industry by storm, revolutionizing the way cows are milked.

We spoke with VMS Solutions Manager, Jason French, to gain a better understanding of this cutting-edge technology. According to French, batch milking involves cows going to a robot instead of a traditional parlor setting for milking. In this system, cows are moved to a group of robots that act as the parlor, rather than farmers walking them to a traditional parlor or rotary.

One of the biggest advantages of batch milking is its ability to stick to a schedule. Robots consistently milk cows at set times, ensuring that farmers can plan their day more effectively. The robots maintain a stable position to ensure a uniform milking process for each cow, even in the absence of human milkers. This level of accuracy and consistency is unparalleled in traditional milking methods.

French also highlighted the unique holding area for cows in this system. It has a completely different atmosphere, with relaxed cows enjoying a pleasant area with fans and the freedom to move from one robot to another. In traditional parlors or rotary systems, cows are often cramped and stressed during the milking process due to overcrowding and lack of movement. However, in VMS batch milking, cows can enter and exit the holding area freely and move between robots at their own pace. This setup ensures that cows are relaxed and stress-free during milk production.
