Health officials in New York are urging residents to stay away from wildlife in response to several cases of bird flu being discovered in Manhattan’s Marcus Garvey Park. The virus has been detected in wild geese, a peregrine falcon, a red-tailed hawk, and even a chicken. To avoid the risk of contracting the disease, experts advise people to limit their contact with wildlife and avoid trying to catch or interact with animals in the park.

While bird flu cases have been identified in other states, the majority of cases have been found in Texas, both in wild bird flocks and domestic poultry. Despite the presence of the virus in birds, there is currently no indication that it is spreading to people. In the past two years in the United States, only two individuals have been infected with bird flu after coming into contact with farm animals.

To protect themselves from the virus, New Yorkers are advised to wash their hands after handling or being near bird droppings. While the risk of contracting bird flu from a sick goose is low, it is better to err on the side of caution and avoid contact with wildlife in Marcus Garvey Park. By following these guidelines, individuals can help prevent the spread of the virus and protect their own health.
