After a series of poor performances, the Mets have decided to designate reliever Michael Tonkin for assignment. This move was necessary in order to add Julio Teheran to the roster after his signing became official. Tonkin had secured one of the final spots in the Mets’ bullpen coming out of spring training but had been hit hard in his last two appearances following a strong outing on Opening Day.

On April 1 against the Detroit Tigers, Tonkin allowed two hits and five runs, none of which were earned, in just 1.0 inning of work. In Game 1 of Thursday’s doubleheader against the Tigers, he allowed four hits and three runs, two of which were earned, in the decisive top of the 11th inning. The Mets had hoped Tonkin would be able to pitch multiple innings at a time, a role he had often filled for the Atlanta Braves in 2023. However, his time with the Mets has come to an end after just three appearances.
