Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive, safe, and painless technique that uses electromagnetic waves to create a magnetic field that passes through the skull, affecting the cerebral cortex. Dr. Nguyen Phuong Trang from the Center for Neuroscience at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City explained that the mechanism of action involves using electrical waves to generate a strong magnetic field capable of penetrating the skull and affecting specific brain areas to provide effective treatment.

This technique creates a secondary electric current inside cortical neurons, stimulating nerve cells and changing nerve electrical function in the targeted brain area. Hospitals in Vietnam have started implementing this technique with successful results in treating conditions like migraines, anxiety disorders, and depression.

For example, Ms. Oanh suffered from severe migraines for two years, leading to anxiety and depression. Conventional treatments were ineffective, so she sought treatment at Tam Anh General Hospital. Dr. Trang prescribed transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy, targeting specific brain areas related to her symptoms.

The treatment involved sessions five times a week for 8 weeks, lasting about 30 minutes each. The patient experienced relief from migraines, anxiety, and depression, leading to an overall improvement in her quality of life. The average response time to this treatment ranges from three months to over a year, with the option for further treatment if needed.

TMS is being used to treat various neurological conditions such as headaches, pain, insomnia, anxiety disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. However, there are contraindications and limitations to consider, such as individuals with certain implants or medical devices. Overall
