In February 2024, Italy saw an increase of 292 thousand employed people compared to April 2023, according to provisional data from Istat. This means that almost 300 thousand more workers are celebrating May 1st this year compared to the previous year. The CGIA Research Office highlighted that the number of employed people in Italy rose to 23,773,000 in February 2024 from 23,481,000 in April 2023.

The artisans of Mestre noted that over 98 percent of companies in Italy have fewer than 20 employees and around 60 percent of Italian workers are employed by these small businesses. The CGIA emphasized the importance of supporting small entrepreneurs to improve employment trends by cutting taxes, reducing bureaucracy, and providing necessary liquidity for investments to increase competitiveness.

In addition to this, Istat reported that in 2023 the number of employed people in Italy reached a total of 23.6 million units with an increase of around 471 thousand compared to the pre-Covid period. There was also significant growth in the Southern regions. Forecasts indicate that by 2025 the overall number of employed people is expected to reach a total of around 24 million units.

The research office also highlighted an increase in the number of employees with fixed-term contracts in 2023 and a significant rise in highly specialized workers and skilled workers. Additionally, there was a rise of around five percent in permanent job positions compared to the pre-pandemic period.
