The upcoming 2024 general elections in Panama promise to be a significant event as citizens head to the polls on Sunday, May 5th. This year, the electorate will choose the next president and vice president of the Republic, as well as 20 deputies to the Central American Parliament (Parlacen) for a mandate from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2029. In addition, seven hundred and one representatives of townships and seventy-one deputies to the National Assembly, along with their substitutes, will also be elected during these general elections.

There are eight presidential candidates vying for votes in this election cycle. The election of district mayors and township representatives will be carried out through simple majority in a single turn. These elections mark the seventh vote since the US invasion that ended Manuel Antonio Noriega’s dictatorship in Panama in 1989.

According to estimates by the Electoral Court, voter turnout is expected to reach an impressive 80% of registered voters. A total of two thousand nine hundred and eighty-two voting centers have been set up across the country for this purpose. With so much at stake, these elections represent a crucial moment for Panama’s future leadership.
