Protests over new taxes in Kenya have resulted in the deaths of more than 20 demonstrators, leading the government to give in to some demands. However, the protests are expected to continue and possibly spread to other countries.

The movement began on social media with young people expressing their discontent with new taxes planned by the government using the hashtag #Rejectfinancebill2024. Despite initial dismissals from Kenyan politicians, the movement grew exponentially over the following weeks, culminating in widespread demonstrations across the country. The protests turned violent, with clashes between demonstrators and police resulting in multiple casualties.

The government initially responded with force by sending in the military, but eventually conceded to the demands by withdrawing the tax package. The protests, which have been dubbed the “Gen Z revolution” by some, are driven by a deep-rooted anger among the youth towards a corrupt political elite that they feel disregards their concerns.

Kenya, despite having a functioning democracy, is plagued by systemic corruption and a political class that prioritizes personal gain over public welfare. The current wave of protests is not just about taxes but reflects a broader frustration with a government that is seen as irresponsible and out of touch with the needs of the people.

The protesters, mostly young and educated, are part of a new generation that is more tech-savvy and well-informed than previous ones. They are not driven by ethnic divisions but by a shared sense of patriotism and a desire for a more accountable and transparent government. Their activism is fueled by a sense of injustice and a determination to hold those in power accountable for their actions.
