In 2022, the Yale Corporation approved the transition of the Section of Biomedical Informatics & Data Science at Yale School of Medicine (YSM) to the Department of Biomedical Informatics & Data Science (BIDS). Since joining YSM, Lucila Ohno-Machado, MD, PhD, MBA, has attracted other prominent leaders in the field to BIDS.

As a result of Ohno-Machado’s leadership, BIDS now has 12 ladder-track faculty members, 13 research-track faculty members and 40 secondary faculty. These faculty members have received awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and professional societies and have served on national committees, advisory boards and university committees. BIDS has made significant progress in its research, education and services missions and has garnered $23 million in grant funding.

The department is focused on reengineering processes for clinical data organization, analysis and access while developing necessary computational infrastructure for utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced analytics in a secure and privacy-protecting manner with an emphasis on reducing health disparities. The department’s success acknowledges the achievements of Ohno-Machado and her dedicated team while further advancing efforts to attract and retain top talent in the field. This recognition positions YSM as a leader in AI in medicine.
