Chile and Mexico have had a long history of cooperation, with both countries sharing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) since August 1999 and a Strategic Partnership Agreement signed in January 2006. Along with Peru and Colombia, the two countries are part of the Pacific Alliance, a regional integration space focused on development.

Recently, Claudia Sheinbaum made history by becoming the first female president of Mexico in over two centuries. With between 58.3% and 60.7% of the votes, Sheinbaum secured her victory over her main opponent Xochitl Galvez by around 30 points. The leftist candidate promised to continue the path set by current President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and bring about social progress through her leadership program.

The president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, congratulated Sheinbaum on her historic win and praised her “leadership” and “social progress program.” He expressed hope that Sheinbaum’s leadership would inspire the region and continue to unite Chile and Mexico as brother countries. Boric also acknowledged the role of past and present women in shaping Sheinbaum’s journey to presidency, thanking them for their fight for Mexico’s future.
