Kentucky baseball is making history as they head to Omaha, Nebraska for the College World Series. The Wildcats secured their spot in the CWS by defeating three-time national champion Oregon State in a thrilling game that ended after midnight on Monday.
Their journey to their first College World Series appearance showcases the Wildcats surpassing expectations. Despite being picked to finish fifth in the Eastern Division by SEC coaches in the preseason poll, Kentucky went on to have a remarkable season. They had the best start in conference play in SEC history, winning 14 of their first 15 games and finishing with a 22-8 record in league play during the regular season. The Wildcats also claimed a share of the league’s regular-season title for only the second time in program history.
With a 45-14 record, the Wildcats enter the College World Series tied for the most wins in a single season in school history. This marks their eighth 40-win season and the first time reaching that mark in consecutive seasons. Head coach Nick Mingione was named the SEC Coach of the Year, and five players received All-SEC honors for their outstanding performances throughout the season.
