On Monday, Cameco, Westinghouse Electric, and Saskatchewan Power announced that they have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the use of Westinghouse’s nuclear reactor technology as a clean power source in Saskatchewan. The companies will be looking into technical and commercial pathways for deploying Westinghouse’s reactor technology, including the advanced AP1000 reactor and AP300 small modular reactor, for long-term electricity supply planning. Saskatchewan Power expects to make a final investment decision in 2029 regarding the construction of the province’s first SMR facility.

The AP1000 reactor is currently operational in the U.S. and China, where Westinghouse has noted it is achieving record levels of operational performance and stability. It has also been selected for nuclear energy programs in Poland, Ukraine, and Bulgaria, while other countries such as India, Europe, and North America are considering its use. The memorandum of understanding signed by Cameco, Westinghouse Electric, and Saskatchewan Power will allow for further evaluation of using Westinghouse’s nuclear reactor technology in Saskatchewan.
