The West Texas A&M Meat Science Quiz Bowl team made history at the 2024 American Meat Science Association Reciprocal Meats Conference in Oklahoma City. On June 16, the team secured both first and second place, marking the first time in the university’s history that this feat had been achieved. Since 2002, only four other universities have accomplished this in the final round. This win added to WT’s first national championship secured in 2020.

Coach Megan Eckhardt, a doctoral graduate student from New Braunfels, praised the team for their dedication and hard work throughout the spring as they prepared for the competition. She emphasized that despite being two separate teams, they worked together with a shared purpose.

The Meat Science Quiz Bowl involves teams of four competing in a double-elimination tournament with 20 head-to-head questions and 20 toss-up questions in each round. Points are awarded based on the speed of their responses. The members of the West Texas A&M University Meat Science Quiz Bowl team come from various majors and backgrounds.

Among them are Ryan Heitschmidt, Helene Keiser, Kade Lawrence, Jacob McMillan, Cole Petit, Josie Petit, Daniel Raab, Clayton Stevenson, Cole Verret, and Spencer Walahoski. Their collective effort and knowledge led to their successful performance and ultimate victory at the competition.
