West Nile fever continues to be a concern in Gush Dan, with nearly 30 patients already hospitalized with suspicion of the disease. Five of these patients are currently in intensive care units, sedated and ventilated. The health system is preparing for the potential increase in infections, particularly among elderly individuals who are at higher risk.

Laboratory tests at Beilinson Hospital confirmed that two deceased patients had West Nile fever, with three more patients currently on ventilators. Tel Hashomer and Ichilov hospitals are also admitting ventilated patients. Another patient in his sixties was admitted to Wolfson Hospital in moderate condition.

The Ministry of Health is urging the public to report any mosquito or water accumulation to local authorities, protect themselves from bites, and seek medical attention if any symptoms worsen. Prof. Nadav Davidovitz, head of the public health program at Ben Gurion University, notes that Israel has had cases of West Nile fever since the 1950s, with a higher prevalence compared to other countries. The summer’s high number of cases may be attributed to climate changes leading to a high viral load in birds that transmit the virus to mosquitoes. Prevention is key, with immediate actions needed to locate mosquito breeding grounds and protect against bites.

Concern about the fever has led to increased demand for mosquito repellents in pharmacy chains like Super-Pharm, which has seen a two-fold increase in purchases particularly in areas where the disease has been reported. Dr. Itai Gal provides information on how to recognize if one has contracted the disease and emphasizes the importance of prevention measures like using mosquito repellents and appropriate clothing, as well as reporting areas with high mosquito activity to local authorities.

The spread of West Nile fever dates back to the 1950s and tends to peak during summer months in certain regions like Sharon, Hadera, and Pardes Hana-Karkur. Symptoms range from mild flu-like illness to severe neurological complications, with treatment focused on symptom relief and supportive care for those at high risk such as those with weakened immune systems or infants and elderly individuals
