Washington, D.C. is now in the running to host the NFL draft, as reported by the Washington Post. The Commanders and D.C. officials are making a bid to host the 2027 NFL draft, joining other cities across the U.S. in competition for this major attraction that brings in significant tourism revenue.
The location of the major draft activities in the nation’s capital has not yet been determined, but one potential site is the National Mall. Since the NFL transformed the draft into a traveling roadshow in 2015, it has consistently attracted hundreds of thousands of attendees each year, with Detroit welcoming an estimated 775,000 visitors over the course of the three-day event in 2019, making it the most-attended draft in history.
Following decades of being a relatively small event held in New York City, the draft has now become a major attraction that cities across the U.S. are eager to host in order to benefit from significant tourism revenue.
Detroit officials reported that the draft weekend brought in more hotel revenue than any other event in Detroit’s history.
As NFL cities continue to compete for future events, Washington, D.C. is positioning itself as a strong contender for hosting future NFL drafts.
