The southern border of Lebanon is at risk of a broader conflict between Hezbollah and the Israeli military due to a miscalculation, warned two United Nations officials in the country. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the United Nations special coordinator for Lebanon, and Aroldo Lazaro, the head of U.N. peacekeeping forces in Lebanon, expressed deep concern about the recent escalation in hostilities along the border.

The recent actions of Iran-backed Hezbollah have been marked by significant volleys of rockets and drones at the Israeli military, which represents the largest such attack in eight months of conflict. The two officials emphasized that any miscalculation could lead to a sudden and wider conflict in the region.

Efforts are being made by the United States and France to negotiate a settlement to the hostilities along Lebanon’s southern border. However, Hezbollah has stated that it will not cease fire until Israel’s military offensive on Gaza comes to an end. The situation remains tense as both sides navigate the complex dynamics of the conflict.
