In an effort to accommodate his demanding work schedule, 35-year-old man Tran Tuan Nam returned to Vietnam for nearsighted surgery. Initially scheduled for surgery in Germany in two months, Nam found the timing inconvenient due to his personal obligations. After visiting Tam Anh High-Tech Eye Center in Vietnam for a follow-up examination, he decided to undergo surgery there instead.

Nam had been nearsighted by two diopters since high school, with the degree of nearsightedness remaining relatively stable over the years but the astigmatism increasing to four diopters. As his vision began to blur gradually, he sought treatment. In Germany, the hospital assessed him as eligible for surgery but scheduled it for two months later due to their prioritization of emergency cases. Faced with a long wait time and high costs, Nam opted for surgery in Vietnam during his trip back home.

At Tam Anh High-Tech Eye Center, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hiep performed the surgery on Nam using the SMILE Pro method. The procedure took less than 20 minutes and restored his vision to 10/10 within a day of surgery. Another patient, 22-year-old international student Ms. Nguyen Thuy Duong also chose to undergo myopia surgery in Vietnam due to cost considerations. She had severe myopia and astigmatism that affected her night vision and ability to exercise. Despite these challenges, Duong opted for surgery in Vietnam because costs were significantly lower compared to other countries while technology and expertise were comparable.

According to Associate Professor Hiep, modern technology and skilled doctors have made Vietnam a desirable destination for medical tourists seeking eye surgery. With advancements in surgical technology and experienced doctors, Vietnam now offers world-class eye surgeries comparable to those in developed countries at much lower prices than other nations like Germany and Singapore. This has led many overseas Vietnamese and foreigners to choose Vietnam for various medical treatments including eye surgeries.

As healthcare services continue to improve in Vietnam, it is expected that more international patients will seek high quality care at reasonable prices here despite language barriers or cultural differences compared with other destinations like Singapore or Thailand which are also popular among medical tourists from all over the world
