The 49ers are currently in search of a replacement for backup tight end Charlie Woerner, who left for the Falcons in free agency. Although they were hoping that 2023 third-round pick Cameron Latu could fill the role after recovering from a season-ending knee injury, they also signed Lions tight end Brock Wright to an offer sheet. However, the Lions matched the three-year, $12 million restricted free agent offer, leaving the 49ers still looking for a solution.

Now, the 49ers are in talks to finalize a deal with veteran tight end Logan Thomas, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Media. Thomas began his NFL career as a quarterback with the Cardinals in 2014 before transitioning to tight end. He has since played the position with the Bills, Lions, and Commanders. In 2023, Thomas had a productive season with 55 receptions for 496 yards and four touchdowns in 16 games with Washington.

Thomas’ experience and versatility could make him a valuable addition to the 49ers’ tight end group, providing depth and a reliable option on the field. As they continue to address their needs at the position, the potential signing of Thomas could be a step in the right direction for the team before the start of the upcoming season.
