US Ambassador Amy Gutmann, who previously served as President of Pennsylvania University, has announced her departure from Germany this summer for personal reasons. The 74-year-old ambassador wishes to join her husband, who is returning to the United States due to professional obligations. Despite lacking prior diplomatic experience, Gutmann has made significant contributions to German-American relations during her time in Berlin.

Gutmann’s decision to return to the US marks the end of her tenure as ambassador in Berlin. Prior to her appointment, the position of US ambassador to Germany had been vacant for over 20 months due to political blockades. The previous ambassador appointed by Donald Trump, Richard Grenell, was known for his controversial approach which did not earn him many allies in the political sphere. However, Gutmann’s team has worked tirelessly to maintain positive relationships with German officials and promote cooperation between the two countries.

Rosenstock-Siller stated that Gutmann is proud of the work she and her team have accomplished and intends to maintain a busy schedule with various commitments before her departure. Despite leaving Berlin, Gutmann remains committed to continuing her work promoting German-American relations through diplomacy and cultural exchange programs.
