Uruguayan midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has issued an apology to Tottenham captain Son Heung-min after making a racial slur on Uruguayan television. During an appearance on Canal 10 show Por La Camiseta, Bentancur was asked by host Rafa Cotelo for a Spurs player’s shirt. In response, the Uruguay international made a comment that was perceived as offensive by saying, “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.”

After facing backlash for his remarks, which quickly spread on social media, Bentancur took to Instagram to apologize directly to Son. He wrote, “Sonny brother, I apologize to you for what happened, it was just a very bad joke. You know I love you and I would never disrespect you or hurt you or anyone else! I love you, brother!” Despite this apology, Son Heung-min has not publicly responded to it as of yet.

The two players have been teammates since Bentancur joined Tottenham from Juventus in January 2022. As they prepare to represent their respective countries at the upcoming Copa America in the United States starting on 20 June, Bentancur will be hoping to put this incident behind him and focus on the upcoming tournament.
