Light, a company that specializes in making minimalistic devices known as “dumb” phones, recently unveiled their latest model, the Light Phone 3. This new device is an evolution from the Light Phone 2, which was released in 2018 and featured basic calling and texting capabilities along with additional functions like navigation, music, podcasts, and a calendar. However, the Light Phone 3 offers more advanced features such as fingerprint ID, rear and front-facing cameras, and the potential to support a digital wallet.

The goal of the Light Phone 3 is to provide users with a smartphone alternative that still offers convenience without the distractions that come with traditional smartphones. The shift towards a slightly smarter dumb phone is intended to make it easier for individuals to detach from their smartphones and reduce screen time. With the addition of a rear camera designed to resemble a classic point-and-shoot camera complete with a shutter button, the Light Phone 3 aims to make photography a more enjoyable and engaging experience.

While the Light Phone 3 does come with a higher price tag compared to its predecessor, retailing at $799, it is currently available for preorder at a reduced price of $399. Shipping is expected to begin in January 2025. The company recognizes the demand for devices that promote a digital detox and cater to individuals who want to be more present by reducing their dependency on smartphones. The Light Phone 3 is positioned as a tool for leading a better life, whether it be for those looking to take a break from technology, parents seeking to engage more with their children or first-time phone users.
