Researchers from Cambridge University and Liverpool John Moores University have painstakingly reconstructed the face of a Neanderthal woman named Shanidar Z, whose remains were discovered in the Shanidar cave in Iraq. The intricate process involved piecing together over 200 fragile skull fragments and creating a 3D print to accurately mold the facial tissues.

Unlike typical Neanderthal features such as thick bony ridges over the eyes, Shanidar Z’s face appears more human-like. This contradicts the common perception of Neanderthals as rugged and primitive beings, shedding light on their humanity. The discovery also highlights the fact that Neanderthals and modern humans interbred, with many people today having Neanderthal DNA in varying degrees.

Shanidar Z was estimated to be over 40 years old, a respectable age for that time. Researchers determined her gender through teeth enamel proteins and estimated her height to be over 150 centimeters. The excavation site where her remains were found also revealed evidence of burial practices among Neanderthals, suggesting a human-like approach to death.

The meticulous work done by conservator Lucía López-Polín and modeling experts Adrie and Alfons Kennis has brought this ancient woman’s story to life, challenging assumptions about our prehistoric ancestors and their similarities to us. Overall, the discovery of Shanidar Z offers valuable insights into the lives of Neanderthals and their interactions with modern humans, reminding us of our shared history with these early hominids.
