During a recent event on June 5 in the Hanoi area, there were 7,000 lightning strikes recorded during a period of heavy rainfall. One individual was critically struck by lightning while working in the field. The effects of lightning on the body are not only due to its thermal properties causing burns but also its electrical properties which can disrupt the natural electrical impulse within the body.

Lightning can directly affect the nervous system, leading to temporary paralysis and damage to cells. The electromagnetic properties of lightning can cause damage to the heart and blood vessels, impacting the heart rate and blood flow throughout the body. Direct lightning strikes, especially in open areas, can cause cardiac and respiratory arrest due to the high amount of electricity passing through the body. Additionally, the disruption to the nervous system can lead to long-term cognitive issues, movement disorders, and nerve damage in survivors.

The risks associated with lightning strikes are not limited to immediate physical harm. Survivors of lightning strikes may experience a range of long-term health issues including movement disorders, vision and hearing impairment, cognitive problems, and mental health concerns. Due to these risks, experts recommend staying informed about the weather to reduce the chances of being struck by lightning. Men, outdoor workers, and those in open areas are particularly at risk of lightning strikes and should take precautions to stay safe.
