Stomach cancer is the 5th most common type of cancer in Vietnam, with over 16,270 new cases reported in 2022. Several factors increase the risk of developing this cancer, including HP infection, genetic mutations, and poor lifestyle habits.

HP infection can lead to diseases such as chronic gastritis, duodenal ulcers, and gastric carcinoma. It can spread from person to person through close contact, sharing utensils, kissing, and contaminated dental instruments. Genetic mutations inherited from parents can also increase the risk of developing stomach cancer. For instance, gene mutations like CDH1 gene mutations and familial adenomatous polyposis are particularly high-risk factors.

Poor living habits such as a diet low in fiber, high in salt, and regular consumption of processed foods and alcohol can contribute to the development of stomach cancer. Additionally, smoking exposure to harmful environmental agents and occupational hazards like dust and radiation can increase the likelihood of developing malignant tumors.

Regular stomach cancer screening is recommended for individuals with high-risk factors to detect the disease early and increase the chance of successful treatment. However, preventive measures are equally important to reduce the risk of developing stomach cancer. These include maintaining scientific living habits by avoiding exposure to harmful environmental agents; eating a balanced diet rich in fiber; limiting alcohol and processed foods; not smoking; exercising regularly; and practicing good hygiene habits like hand washing regularly.

By following these lifestyle recommendations individuals can better protect themselves against stomach cancer and improve their overall health and well-being.
