I have been friends with a woman for 40 years, but lately, our relationship has taken a turn. She is constantly talking about her health problems and treatments whenever she calls me. Additionally, our political views differ greatly, and we often find ourselves in heated discussions.

I try to steer the conversation away from politics, but it seems like she has other friends she could confide in. I don’t understand why she chooses to unload all of this on me. It feels like our friendship has run its course, and I would like to end it as smoothly as possible without causing too much pain.

It might not be easy to break off this friendship, but I could start by expressing my opposing views on politics the next time the topic comes up. It’s possible that she might stop contacting me altogether if we can’t agree on anything anymore.
