According to the International Shark Attack File (ISAF) of the Florida Museum of Natural History, the United States has earned the reputation of being the “shark attack capital of the world” in 2023. The ISAF database, which is considered the most comprehensive shark attack data collection globally, confirms this claim. With a total of 36 confirmed cases, the United States had the highest number of unprovoked shark bites worldwide last year.

The report reveals that Florida accounted for 44% of all recorded U.S attacks in 2023, with Volusia County having the highest number at 50%. The trend over time shows an increase in global shark attacks, and this report highlights that there were ten fatal unprovoked shark attacks in 2023, compared to five recorded in 2022.

Despite a slight decline in incidents compared to previous years, Australia had a disproportionate share of fatalities, accounting for 40% of total deaths despite representing only 22% of all attacks. Other countries that faced confirmed deaths from shark attacks included Brazil, Egypt, Mexico, and New Caledonia. Non-fatal shark bites were reported in Costa Rica and South Africa.

Gavin Naylor, director of the museum’s shark research program, expressed concern over the increase in fatalities while acknowledging that the number of bites was within a normal range. This report underscores the need for continued research and awareness to ensure safety for both humans and sharks alike.
