June marks Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month and 8News had the chance to speak with James Harris, founder of the Richmond organization “Men to Health”. Harris, who grew up as a ward of the state and has firsthand experience with mental health resources available to men in urban environments, noticed a disconnect and decided to take action to support his community.

After serving in the military and being deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, Harris noticed that 6 million men in America suffer from depression each year but it is often underdiagnosed. He believes that depression in men can look different from traditional diagnostic criteria. In addition to common symptoms like isolation and lack of interest, men may exhibit anger, irritability, and disconnection.

Harris recommends that individuals prioritize their own safety and well-being before helping someone else. Surrounding oneself with supportive people, reducing reckless behavior, exercising regularly, and attending therapy are all ways to ensure personal needs are met. He also emphasizes on encouraging open conversations about mental health within communities.

In summary, Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month is an opportunity to shed light on the mental health struggles faced by men and boys as well as encourage open conversations within communities. Through education, understanding and advocacy we can help address the unique challenges that men face when it comes to mental health.
