Clivia, a beloved houseplant among many, has caught the attention of Anneliese Plamoser, a reader who enjoys nurturing her own. However, this year she is disheartened as her Clivia has failed to produce any blossoms for the first time. In search of guidance on how to encourage blooming, she turned to Bettina Bayer Grilz, a plant expert at bellaflora.

Grilz suggests that overwintering in a warm location could be one reason why Anneliese’s Clivia is not flowering. To promote blooming, she recommends placing the Clivia in a bright and cool environment (5°-12°C) from October to February. During the warm season, it should be kept in bright locations without direct sunlight. In the summer, it can be placed outside in a semi-shaded, weather-protected area to cool off.

Another possible cause for lack of blooming could be repotting the plant into larger containers. Clivias thrive when their roots are slightly restricted in pots that are too narrow. It is advised to repot the plant into a larger pot only every three to four years. Terracotta pots are ideal for stability and watering should be done with room temperature or rainwater to avoid waterlogging.

Regular watering is crucial for Clivias from spring to autumn, ensuring that soil surfaces are dry before watering and avoiding waterlogging. Watering should also be reduced in autumn and kept minimal in winter months. Moreover, liquid flowering plant fertilizer should be applied every two weeks from March to July and long dark leaves should be regularly wiped with damp cloths to promote healthy growth.

In conclusion, with proper care and attention given by Anneliese Plamoser following Bettina Bayer Grilz’s advice on overwintering location and timing of watering and fertilizer application as well as regular maintenance of soil moisture levels and leaf cleaning , her Clivia may yet have hope for another beautiful bloom soon!
