In recent years, research has revealed that the conditions of compulsory internships for young people in vocational higher schools (BHS) and most at vocational middle schools (BMS) are not always fair. A survey conducted by the Austrian Institute for Vocational Education Research (ÖIBF) found that seven percent of BMS students receive no pay, while 14 percent of BHS students receive no pay or only pocket money. Among those who received a contract, one in ten were unclear on their employment status.

The Austria Chamber of Labour (AK) has called for an end to unpaid internships and is advocating for fair and just conditions for mandatory internships. The AK has also proposed introducing a mandatory internship salary and creating regional and central internship exchanges to facilitate the search for internships. The AK sees a particular need for action in the tourism sector, where improvements to working conditions are necessary to attract skilled workers.

According to the survey, IT/Telecommunications, Construction/Building Services, and Automotive/Mechanical Engineering were rated as the most satisfying working conditions. However, tourism and gastronomy were rated as particularly adverse working conditions. This highlights the need for greater attention to be paid to improving working conditions in these sectors.

It is important that young people receive proper compensation and support during their training so they can succeed both personally and professionally. The AK’s call for fairer internship practices will help ensure that young people have access to the resources they need to succeed in their careers.

In conclusion, it is crucial that young people receive fair compensation and support during their mandatory internships. By advocating for fairer practices, organizations like the Austria Chamber of Labour can help ensure that young people have access to the resources they need to succeed in their careers.
