On Monday evening, chaos ensued as three parking garages along the banks of the Rhine were unexpectedly closed. The closure was due to the St. John’s Night Festival in Mainz, which traditionally ends with fireworks. To protect the flow of pedestrians watching the fireworks, the city closed the parking garages between Fischtorplatz and Kaisertor from 9:30 p.m. on Monday to 1 a.m. on Tuesday.

Drivers who had parked before the closure were unable to leave as several flatbed trucks blocked the exits. The closure was only indicated by small A4 printouts, leaving many festival-goers unaware of what was happening. As a result, they were left standing in the parking garages, unable to drive out.

After a period of frustration, the city eventually allowed drivers to leave the parking garages before the intended closure time. However, their relief was short-lived as they encountered another obstacle on their journey home: a motorcade of Italian football fans causing yet another traffic jam.

The unexpected closure of the parking garages and subsequent traffic jam made for a challenging end to the festival for many attendees. The chaotic situation highlighted the importance of communication and planning to ensure a smooth experience for all involved.
