In Sri Lanka, many citizens facing difficulties turned to advertisements for high-paying light jobs abroad. Unfortunately, they ended up falling victim to Russian and Ukrainian officials who deceived them into participating in the Russia-Ukraine war. At least 16 Sri Lankan citizens are currently missing in the conflict.

Recently, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Tharaka Balasuriya expressed regret over the situation and stated that his government is working with the Ministry of Defense to determine the actual number of citizens involved in the war. Families of the missing Sri Lankan citizens are distraught and are appealing for help in bringing their loved ones back safely.

The economic crisis in Sri Lanka has driven many citizens to seek work abroad, leading them to fall prey to false promises of lucrative jobs in Russia. Stories of families selling all their possessions to fund their loved ones’ journey to Russia highlight the desperation faced by many. Recruiters exploiting vulnerable individuals and sending them into the war zone have caused immense suffering for these families.

Sri Lanka’s neutral stance in the conflict is being tested as tensions rise due to the involvement of its citizens. The government is actively engaging with Ukraine and Russia to ensure the safe return of all Sri Lankan citizens caught up in the conflict.
