When it comes to determining the best cities in the world, quality of life is a crucial factor. But what exactly constitutes quality of life and how can it be measured? According to the recent Oxford Economics’ Global Cities Index for 2024, there are six main indicators that assess quality of life: life expectancy, income per person, income equality, recreation and cultural sites, internet speed, and housing expenditure.

Grenoble, France has been ranked as the city with the best quality of life score. Known as the ‘capital of the Alps’, Grenoble is popular for hiking and is also a hub for scientific research. In second place is Canberra, the Australian capital. Switzerland claims third place with Bern and also holds fifth and eighth positions with Basel and Zurich respectively. Zurich has been ranked as the best scoring city in the world for tech, services, and infrastructure.
