The first warm-up match for Australia’s Twenty20 World Cup team against Namibia had an unusual start as the Australians could only field nine squad members instead of the required 11. This forced coach and chief selector to join the players on the field. Despite the unconventional start, Australia managed to secure a win by seven wickets at Trinidad’s Queen’s Park Oval, with opener David Warner leading the team with 54 not out.

The missing players from the World Cup squad included Pat Cummins, Travis Head, Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell, and Cameron Green. They were given some time off following their Indian Premier League commitments. Selection chief George Bailey and fielding coach Andre Borovec joined the team on the field in unmarked shirts to make up the numbers during the match. They were later joined by batting coach Brad Hodge and head coach Andrew McDonald when captain Mitch Marsh and Josh Hazlewood took some time off.

Australian fast bowler Hazlewood mentioned that despite not having a full squad, it was a good opportunity for some of the players to get some much-needed playing time after a long break. The team faced some challenges with players coming off extended breaks but were grateful for the experience gained from playing in the warm-up match. In other T20 tournament warm-up matches, two games in England and Dallas, Texas were washed out earlier on Tuesday.
