On Wednesday night, the New York Liberty emerged victorious over the Phoenix Mercury with a final score of 81-78. Sabrina Ionescu scored 22 points and Jonquel Jones added 20 to lead the Liberty’s charge. The team found themselves trailing 74-71 in the fourth quarter before going on a game-changing 9-0 run, with Jones contributing four crucial points to take control of the game.

Jones’ layup with 2:12 left in the game started the Liberty’s comeback, followed by two free throws with 1:09 remaining on the clock, giving New York a slim lead of 76-74. Betnijah Laney-Hamilton sealed the victory for the Liberty with a difficult foul line jumper, extending their lead to four points with just 30 seconds left on the clock.

Natasha Cloud and Kahleah Copper scored 21 points and 20 points respectively for the Mercury, but they were unable to overcome the Liberty’s strong finish. Injured WNBA star Brittney Griner showcased progress on the court before the game, as she has been out of action with a broken toe. Coach Nate Tibbetts confirmed that Griner is out of her protective boot, signaling positive steps towards her recovery.

The Phoenix Mercury will aim to bounce back as they close out their road trip with a game against Minnesota on Friday night. Meanwhile, the New York Liberty will face off against Washington in their next game of their three-game homestand on Friday night.
